FG inaugurates Shagamu water

Minister of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu, has inaugurated a Partnership for Expanded Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (PEWASH) Water Supply Project in Shagamu, Ogun State.
Better known as Shagamu Water-Health Centre, it has the capacity to service 20,000 people per day.
A statement by the Head, Press and Public Relations Unit, Mrs Funmi Imuetinyan, on Friday, said the Shagamu Water Supply Project, tagged "Sustainable drinking Water Solutions" was constructed under the PEWASH phase II implementation programme.
According to the statement, the Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu, represented by the Director, Water Supply, Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Engr. Nicholas Madu, while inaugurating the Water Supply Project reiterated that PEWASH which is a national multi-sectoral collaboration developed by the Ministry of Water Resources purposely to improve rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene geared towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals targets 6.1 and 6.2.
He said the government is committed to ensuring that all rural populations have 100 percent access to sustainable water supply and improved sanitation in order to eliminate Open Defecation in Nigeria by 2025.
He stressed the newly commissioned Shagamu Water-health Centre and others built on a BOT agreement will be handed over to the respective LGAs after the concessionary period for operations and maintenance of the facilities in line with the federal government's policy of handing over all completed facilities to either States, LGAs or directly to the beneficiary communities.
He enjoined them to own the facilities and ensure sustained management and maintenance of the centres while also urging that center workers should be employed from the LGAs/ communities and trained in order to fulfill the contractual obligations.
Giving the overview of the water project, Mrs. Jummai Wakaso said the Water-health Centres located in five local government areas of Ogun State include, Shagamu, Shagamu LGA; Ijebu Igbo, Ijebu North LGA; Sango Ota, Ado-Odo/OTA LGA; Campus Area, Odeda LGA and Ilaro and Yewa South LGA respectively.
Wakaso said that the Water-health Centres are part of Waterprenuer scheme and they are expected to be operated as such in the 5 LGAs.
Giving the breakdown of the project, she said, there are also construction of Boreholes in the 5 locations, Installation of purification system, dispensing points installation of pre-treatment units, multi-media, activated carbon filters and installation of reverse osmosis as well as the ultraviolet filter system among other very important water components.
